AOEC News Updates

May 2013

The AOEC is holding its third and final Blood Drive of the year with the American Red Cross on Thursday, May 2, 2013, from 10:00a until 2:00p in the AOEC Gym.  Any presenting senior who graduates is a candidate for the Red Cross Scholarship!  The amount of the scholarship depends upon the amount of blood donated at AOEC.  Thanks for your help and your past support of our blood drives!  Please come join us and help save a life!

 

APRIL 2013

AOEC is having the Y.W.C.A. Spring Health Fair on Wednesday, April 10, 2013 from 8:30a until 1:00p at the AOEC for all students.

 

Mr. David McGuire from Lincoln College of Technology will be here Tuesday, April 16th, 2013, at 11:00am & 1:00pm.  He will be in Room # 33 (Across from Library) to speak with our students about "Life after High School" and some "New Scholarship Information".

 

FEBRUARY 2013

Entrepreneur Day!
On Thursday February 28, 2013 along with our end of the month challenge there will be an assembly.  The assembly will be comprised of different companies that are either African-American owned or managed by an African-American.  The companies will be holding interviews to a select few students (particularly seniors and juniors).  Those students who would like to interview for a job must sign up on the sign-in sheets.  Those students will then go through an actual screening process and from there will be selected for an interview.  We look forward to this great day and thank you to Ms. Smith for setting this up!

 

The AOEC is holding its 2nd Blood Drive for the year with the American Red Cross on Thursday, February 7 , 2013 from 10:00am-3:00pm in the AOEC Gym.  Graduating seniors are eligible for a Red Cross scholarship when we meet our goal. If you are interested in donating please sign up with Mr. Kelleher.  Please come join us and help save a life!

 

JANUARY 2013

On Thursday January 17, 2013 the members of the Lake County Chapter of CEASE FIRE will be in attendance at A.O.E.C.  These gentlemen will be speaking to the students about what does CEASE FIRE mean, what do they do in the community, and what is there purpose for coming out to the schools.  They will also be asking the students if they would be interested in volunteering to help with the community wide peace rally being held February 9th, 2013.

 

NOVEMBER 2012

AOEC is having the Y.W.C.A. Fall Health Fair on November 29, 2012.  This semester the presentations will be on

1) Diet & exercise

2) HIV / STD's

3) A cooking health demo

4) Computer Systems Institute - "College...A Way of Life"

 

The AOEC is holding a Blood Drive with the American Red Cross on Thursday, November 1 , 2012 from 10:00am-3:00pm in the AOEC Gym.  This is the first blood drive of the year.   Any graduating senior who donates blood and helps with the blood drive is eligible for a red cross scholarship for post secondary education.  The amount depends upon how much blood is collected and how we choose to divide the scholarship amount up.  Please come join us and help save a life!

 

SEPTEMBER 2012

State Representative, Mrs. Rita Mayfield, will be at the AOEC on Friday, September 28th, 2012.  She will be speaking to the students about the importance of voting as well as bringing someone along with her who will be able to register students who are 18 or older to vote.

The assembly will be in the Wixom Auditorium starting at 10:30 a.m. for the morning shift and 11:15 for the afternoon shift.

**If any student 18 or older would like to register to vote, they must bring a valid ID (a driver's license or state issued ID) with their correct address as well as another form of identification (i.e. birth certificate, social security card).

MAY 2012

On Friday, May 4, 2012, the AOEC is conducting a Law Day with a tour of the courts!

The AOEC is holding a Blood Drive with the American Red Cross on Tuesday, May 8 , 2012 from 10:00am-2:00pm in the AOEC Gym.  This is the second and final blood drive of the year.  Thanks to your help the AOEC is credited with 15 pints of blood collected. We need to collect 15 or more pints to be able to award a scholarship to a graduating senior. Please come join us and help save a life!

***BLOOD DRIVE UPDATE***

Students and staff from the Stephens Center AOEC Program and the EPIC Program hosted the spring blood drive May 8,2012, and successfully exceeded their annual goal!   More that thirty pints of blood were donated this year in fall and spring blood drives in the gym.  The American Red Cross will award a scholarship to a senior graduating this year who donated blood while completing graduation requirements at AOEC!   A representative from Children’s Memorial Hospital, Ms. Jacinta Williams, was on hand to thank students especially students of African American heritage since blood donated may be used for the sickle cell donor program.   The Red Cross team spoke highly of the student’s from AOEC who helped carry all the necessary equipment and acted as greeter and coordinated the drive.

On Thursday May 17, 2012 the AOEC will be holding the second Health Fair of the year sponsored by the YWCA from 8:00a - 1:00p in various rooms in the building, the Wixom and gym.

 

APRIL 2012

Monday, April 16, 2012, Ms. Shawna Morrow, from "Computer Systems Institute" will be in the AOEC
Library (Room #34) at 11:30am & 1:00pm.  All Junior and Senior, Male and Female interested in career programs in Information Technology, Health-care and Business Administration career-oriented disciplines are invited.

CHAMPIONS FOR TODAY! AOEC is having an assembly on Friday, April 20th!  The guest speaker is Clarence Lee from Champions for Today.  Clarence Played on the 1993 National Championship Football Team, Florida State University.  He was a double Math Major at Florida State.  Clarence held the bench press record at Florida State, as well as holding the NFL camp bench press record.  He stands 5’11”, and weighs 290 pounds.  Clarence has bench pressed 640 pounds, squatted 800 pounds, and leg pressed 1 ton.  Clarence travels around the U.S. and over-seas speaking to and inspiring young people to reach their potential in life.

AOEC 11th grade students will be taking the ACT test April 24-25, 2012.

 

FEBRUARY 2012

The Pickus Infant/Toddler Center located at the AOEC is having a Valentine Day Celebration on Monday, February 13, 2012 from 12:00pm – 2:00pm.  Please come out and meet the Teen Parents and learn about the Center!  RSVP: Pam Hoover 847-625-7915

JANUARY 2012

The AOEC will be holding a Health Fair sponsored by the YWCA on Wednesday, January 25, 2012.  The health fair will run in the morning for all students.

 

**AOEC In The News!**

The January 14-15, 2012 Weekend Edition of The Lake County News-Sun newspaper reports an article titled, "The Graduate", telling about AOEC graduate, Juan Padilla, earning his Waukegan H.S. diploma through the AOEC program.  The article tells of his struggles to do so, but how his perseverance paid off as well as the opportunity he was able to get at AOEC to get his high school diploma.

 

NOVEMBER 2011

The Pickus Infant and Toddler Center located in the AOEC is having a Pie Tasting Event on Tuesday, November 22, 2011 from 11:30am - 1:00pm.  Please come and enjoy and support the Pickus Center!  There will also be a raffle!

 

On Wednesday, November 16th, Mr. David McGuire, from Lincoln Tech will be giving an introductory presentation at the AOEC in Room 32.
All Juniors & Seniors are invited to this presentation.  There will be two sessions, one at 11:30 am, and one at 1:00pm. Each session will last approximately one 1 hour.

OCTOBER 2011

A CLC Presentation for AOEC Juniors and Seniors is being held on Thursday, October 6, 2011 from 11:00a-12:15p in the AOEC Library.  Dave Martinez from CLC will be speaking about CLC and an opportunity for some students to take a college prerequisites course on writing for college at AOEC.  For those who qualify, the course will be free.

Twilight School begins on Tuesday, October 11, 2011.  Intakes/Registration is being held Tuesday, October 4th and Wednesday, October 5th in the Twilight School Office at the AOEC from 4:00 - 6:30 PM.

AOEC Saturday School for the 2011-2012 school year began on Saturday, October 1, 2011.  For a complete list of dates for the whole school year please see the Programs Schedule section.  If you are interested in signing up, please contact the AOEC Main Office at (847) 360-5540.

Welcome to 2011-2012 School Year AOEC students!  We look forward to seeing those returning and those new faces!  Great things are going to be accomplished this year.  Lets go for it!

JUNE 2011

The AOEC is holding two Summer School sessions this year for AOEC students.  The cost is $25 per student and sign up is done in the AOEC Main Office.  Session 1 is from June 10, 2011 through June 30, 2011.  Session 2 is from July 5, 2011 through July 28, 2011.  Class times for both sessions is 8:00am-12:00pm.

 

MAY 2011

The AOEC is holding its Spring Blood Drive with The Red Cross on Tuesday, May 10, 2011 from 10:00a to 2:30p.  If you are interested in giving blood, please speak to any AOEC student council representative or Mr. Kevin Kelleher, AOEC Social Worker.  If we reach 30 pints we will be able to award a scholarship to a graduating senior. We are about half way to our yearly goal.   Thanks for your support!

OCTOBER 2010

Twilight Program Begins

The Twilight program begins on Monday, October 4, 2010 for the 2010-2011 school year.  The Twilight program is an evening alternative program held at the AOEC building Monday through Thursday from 5:30pm-8:30pm.  Please contact Carol Oliva, Secretary, at (847) 360-5540 during those hours for information or to fill out an application.

 

Tardy Policy

Beginning Monday, October 4, 2010, the AOEC is implementing a new Tardy Policy.  All classroom doors will be locked at 8:00 A.M. for morning session and 1:00 P.M. for afternoon session.  Any students that arrive after those times will be sent to the office to fill out a tardy tag.  The student will return to their class with both the tardy tag and the tardy pass where the teacher will review them with the student for methods of improving on time performance.  Each teacher will maintain the pass and tags for parent conferences if needed.

 

SEPTEMBER 2010

On Tuesday, Sept. 14th, at 11:30 am, and 1:30pm, in Room 13, Sharice Holt & Yolanda Williams from COMPUTER SYSTEMS INSTITUTE will be giving a presentation to interested AOEC Junior and Senior students on "Life After High School" and "How to prepare yourself for Job Interviews".  This should be very informative to all who attend.

On Thursday, Sept. 16th, at 11:30am and 12:30pm, in the Wixom Auditorium, Mr. David McGuire from LINCOLN TECH will be giving a presentation to all interested AOEC Junior and Senior students about the programs they offer.
