Glenwood Elementary School opened for classes on September 2, 1958. At that time, our 12-room school was designed for grades Kindergarten through six. Almost immediately, revisions were made in the building because it became apparent that more students would be attending than had been planned for. Student enrollment was expected to reach 225 students. Glenwood’s student population has grown over the years so that today our student population comes from all areas of Waukegan and now exceeds 600 students for grades one through five. We are proud of our accomplishments and student diversity. Our mission is to establish an individually challenging educational environment for every student so they can be successful not only in school but in life. Our curriculum supports the goals set forth by the Illinois State Board of Education and we have made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) on the Illinois State Achievement Test. It is our belief that all children have the potential to learn and develop into productive citizens. We believe our school should strive to accommodate the differences inherent in each child and that a child’s education should be a positive experience in a safe environment conducive to learning. The Glenwood School instructional staff includes two building administrators, regular education teachers, special education teachers, and specialists in the areas of reading, music, art and physical education. Our support staff also includes a school nurse, school psychologist, social worker, speech pathologists, librarian, computer technician and a number of paraprofessionals. Glenwood Elementary School is dedicated to educating children to their fullest potential. Our school will provide a safe and orderly environment that is conducive to learning. We strive to have strong educational instructional leaders who will continually monitor student progress and have high expectations for them. Glenwood’s staff is dedicated to making the educational process a positive and meaningful experience for all students. |
