Family Reading Night

Wednesday, November 10, 2010- Antonio Sacre, the well-known Bi-lingual Storyteller visited McCall for the whole day. He met with all grade levels combining his theatrical experience, diverse background, and work in education to create a warm and interactive presentation. In the evening, he shared his personal experiences with families through celebration and exploration of his own bi-cultural upbringing. Antonio brings the joy of personal diversity to students of all ethnic backgrounds through his shared love of reading and storytelling.

Holidays around the World

Wednesday, December 1, 2010- McCall students’ grades 1-5 attended the performance Holidays around the World at the Genesee Theatre. Children learned the history, as well as participated with different holidays such as Chanukah, Christmas, Kwanzaa, and the Chinese New Year through music and songs. Following the performance, students and staff had their lunch upstairs at the theatre. We all had a fabulous time…McCall students were very well-behaved!

McCall's Winter Festival

Tuesday, December 14, 2010- “McCall’s 1st Annual Winter Festival” celebrated the theme “Touchdown to Success.”  Planning for this event began much earlier in the school year as Dr. Meczyk and classroom teachers began talking with students  about McCall School’s goal for them of future college attendance. Each grade level was then assigned a university to learn about and to which students wrote letters seeking information. For the Winter Festival each grade level created a float that reflected their University’s mascot and colors. Featured universities included Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, Southern California, Notre Dame and Tennessee. The floats were presented to parents and other visitors at a “Rose Bowl” style parade in the school gym which was led by The Waukegan High School Marching Band, special guest former Chicago Bear Revey Sorey and McCall’s own version of “Paula Deen”.  Students entertained along the parade route by performing the fight songs of the colleges they had studied. The halftime entertainment was Lady gaga alias Mrs. Garrison.  Each grade level also decorated a tree reflecting the color and mascot of their college. The festivities also included tailgating, pictures with Santa, face painting, real live reindeer, hot chocolate and cookies, and various vendors. Fun was had by all!!

Fuel up to play

Friday January 7, 2011- "Fifth Grade Lunch Team" meeting-

McCall is the first elementary school in Waukegan to participate in the FuelUptoPlay60 grant. A group of fifth grade students will take a leadership role and be involved with the implementation of healthy food choices. The fifth grade student lunch team will be involved in creating surveys for the different grade levels to find out what foods the students like that are healthy. The results will be incorporated with creating the school lunch menu. The physical component of the program will be the “McCall Milers Walking Club,” which walks around the school during recess with supervision. Both healthy eating and physical activity components are a necessity to provide the essential benefits for children. The program will accent on successful strategies that will ensure healthier life styles.

Field Day

After Field Day was rained out once (May 21st), May 28th dawned sunny and warm for Ms. Woodard’s final Field Day. Ms Woodard arrived at Field Day on an ATV driven by Mr Van Abel and welcomed by the cheers of McCall’s students.  Following a special ceremony at which Principal Meczyk declared the last week of school “Woodard Week” to honor Ms Woodard’s retirement, field day began.  Sun, water and fun were the order of the day concluding with frozen treats and a staff water balloon toss.  Everyone went home tired!

Awards

The Award Extravaganza was held on May 27th.  We entered to the sounds of our favorite music and Mr Kragh’s greetings as we made our way down the red carpet to our seats.  Awards were given in many categories; math, reading, art, and PE to name a few.  Recyclers, Milers, Band and Student Council members were some of the groups that were recognized.  Mr. and Mrs. Glinka produced a memorable slide presentation proving it was a very busy year at HR McCall.

Annie Junior

Performances of the play Annie Junior were held on May24th and May 26th at McCall.  Our auditorium was filled with families enjoying this special performance, another first for our school.  Cast members rehearsed for many hours and this was evident in their performance.  Special thanks to Mrs. Clifton and Ms. Bickham for directing the play.

Curriculum Carnival

McCall’s first Curriculum Carnival was held on Saturday, May22nd.  Festivities began with the threat of rain but in true McCall fashion the day brightened up and everyone had a great time. Student performances and displays of special work were the focus of the day.  From face painting to raffles and a petting zoo to rummage sale and more…, there was something of interest for every family member. Special thanks to Ms.Costello and Mrs.Diaz for  coordinating the event.

McCall Readers Step Up to the Plate

McCall School has partnered with the Lake County Fielders to promote reading. Students are participating in the Fielders “Dive Into a Good Book” incentive program and can earn prizes and tickets to a Fielder by completing the program. Each classroom has created a dugout full of readers and “runs the bases” by reading required amounts of minutes with the goal of getting to home plate. Those students who score a run will also have the opportunity to participate in a pre-game parade and take the field and run the bases after an upcoming Fielders game!

Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing

On March 18th the McCall Family was treated to a special stage performance by Two Beans Productions/ the New York Theatre Company. The play Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, is based on a book by Judy Blume. It featured fourth grade student Peter Hatcher. Peter would have a great life if not for his baby brother Fudge. McCall students loved Fudge and his antics. From throwing a tantrum to eating a turtle, Fudge complicated Peter's life and entertained us. Students and Teachers alike enjoyed the play and the question and answer session afterward. Thank you Two Beans Productions!

St.Patrick's Day

Special celebrations took place in many classrooms at McCall on March 17th, St. Patrick's Day. Mrs. Mateo's class sports Leprechaun hats they made to celebrate the day!
